A couple weekends ago Mike and I visited Big Star for the very first time. Gasp! I know…crazy right?! I don’t know how I put off going to Chicago’s taco mecca for so long but somehow I did and that has now been remedied!
Big Star is a cool little taco joint on Damen, just south of North Ave, in Chicago‘s Wicker Park neighborhood, that is known for having some of the best damn tacos in the city. They are always packed, especially on their outdoor patio in the summer months. They have indoor seating as well with bright yellow chairs, a beautiful bar, and tons of natural light pouring in from every angle; add the tacos, craft beers, margaritas, and whiskey to that atmosphere and you’ve got yourself an instant dose of happy!
Mike and I started with drinks-Three Floyds Gumballhead for him and the La Paloma for me. I love me some tequila and grapefruit! We ordered chips & guac (obviously) along with 1 of each of their tacos: Al Pastor, Pork Belly, Potato, Beer Battered Tilapia, and Chicken. They were all delicious, but my favorites were the Al Pastor and the Taco de Pescado (tilapia). The Al Pastor was full of flavor and topped with grilled pineapple, onion, and cilantro that took the pork to a whole new level. Yum! The beer battered tilapia was fried golden on the outside and perfectly flaky on the inside-and the portion of fish you get is no joke. The chipotle mayo, cabbage, cilantro, and lime toppings complemented the fish perfectly.
Even though we were comfortably full, we ordered the Sonoran Hot Dog to finish off our meal, because I don’t think I could write a blog post about Big Star without it. The Sonoran Hot Dog: crispy, bacon wrapped, all beef hot dog, pinto beans, lime mayo, mustard, onions, big star hot sauce, bolillo roll.
It was huge, it was messy, and it was difficult to eat, but it was definitely one of the best hot dogs I’ve ever had! You don’t want to miss the tacos, but if you’ve got a few people to split it with or you’re on a return visit, I would definitely give the Sonoran a try! Love me some Big Star, can’t wait to enjoy tacos al fresco this summer!
**Big Star is cash only, they have an ATM inside but that means fees-so stop by your bank before heading over!
