Three Aces

Written by , Posted in Chicago, Restaurants

I got a great surprise this past weekend when I found out one of my best friends would be in town on Sunday. Her husband is Canadian and they were planning on catching the final men’s hockey game of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics along with his brothers at The Globe Pub…at 6am. When my alarm went off at 5:30am I was seriously regretting staying up to watch one more episode of House of Cards the night before, but I slapped on some bright red lipstick, pulled Mike out of bed, and we joined the rest of the hockey fans that packed The Globe Pub and watched Canada take home the gold. The perfect follow-up to this early morning wake-up call? Brunch at Three Aces in Chicago‘s Little Italy.

As we salivated over the menu and read descriptions that included cheddar grits, maple-pork jus, and bacon sriracha, I knew my friends had made the perfect choice. We started with bloody marys (with beer backs, of course) and tasty bar snacks like duck fat chips and popcorn with roasted garlic hot sauce. I also tried The Cure-a seriously fantastic brunch cocktail made with cold-pressed Unicorn’s Blood espresso blend, El Dorado 5 year aged rum, Carpano Antica, Fernet Branca-this one definitely packs a punch!

In no time at all our plates filed out of the kitchen. I went with the Ace burger-aged cheddar, trimmings, bacon jam, aioli, garlic and hops pickle, and a side of bolognese fries. The burger…good. The bolognese fries…amazing. My friend Katie also enjoyed the bolognese fries but she opted for the “Double-Double” burger-a towering stack topped with American cheese, romaine, and special sauce on a brioche bun. If you’re in the mood for a burger neither of these will disappoint!

Mike had the Breakfast Poutine-fries, sausage gravy, fried egg, bacon, bacon siracha, scallions. Definitely the best overall dish and the perfect stick-to-your-ribs hangover cure. Although a bit messy, the Drop biscuit sandwich with a cheddar-scallion biscuit, ham, aged cheddar, fried farm egg, sausage gravy fries was also a hit at our table.

Bottom line: great drinks and great food…two great reasons to check out the spot where “Italian countryside meets the American farm house…in Keith Richard’s basement bar”!
