Pike Place Market

Written by , Posted in Travel

There was just so much to see and do in Pike Place Market that there was no way I was fitting it all into just one post! We spent more time in the market after our tour with Savor Seattle and we also stopped by again on the Saturday after our cruise before heading back home to Chicago. The market is definitely an overload for the senses – the scent of buttery goodness from the bakeries, the sight and smell of the bright, fresh produce and flowers in every color lining the stalls (and only $10 for gorgeous, giant bouquets!), the smell of freshly caught seafood and the feel of the cool ocean air on your face…even when it’s raining the market is a truly beautiful place!

We had some great food on our Savor Seattle tour, but we only had a bite or two at each stop and there were definitely a few places where we wanted more! We returned to Pike Place Chowder not once, but TWICE – later in the day after our tour and again on Saturday before returning home. There is almost always a line there but trust me, it’s worth the wait! We had several chowders while in Alaska and nothing lived up to Pike Place Chowder! We had large cups of their New England Clam Chowder and the amazing Seafood Bisque, but I also tried the Seared Scallop Chowder and wow was it amazing! Tons of scallop chunks with a delicious dill and lime flavor – I still love the bisque, but I really love dill so the scallop was the winner for me. ***Here’s a tip that we discovered on our second visit – you can order your chowder in a sourdough bread bowl and they make excellent use of the bread they pull out of the middle! Each bowl of chowder is served with a slice of bread BUT they individually wrap the insides of the bread bowls and put them in a bowl where the silverware and napkins are found – you’re free to have as many bread bowl insides as you like! If you’re a sourdough bread lover like me, this is like a little piece of heaven!

On our tour we passed Rachel’s Ginger Beer and knew that we had to stop by for a drink afterwards. They have a ton of fresh, fruity ginger beers in addition to their original flavor and they offer the option of adding a little somethin’ somethin’ to make a tasty, refreshing cocktail. I had a Moscow Mule with Blood Orange Ginger Beer and Tito’s Vodka and it hit the spot. They also make a mean Hot Toddy – perfect if you’re looking to soothe a sore throat or warm up on a chilly day!

The other 2 stops I wanted to make after the tour were The Confectional for their Colombian drinking chocolate and Piroshky Piroshky for more buttery piroshki deliciousness. Colombian drinking chocolate is a super thick hot chocolate (basically the consistency of a melted chocolate bar) and if it’s just you doing the drinking you only need a very small cup to be satisfied. The Confectional knows how to do Colombian drinking chocolate, that’s all I have to say! Sprinkle the tiniest amount of cayenne on top…chocolatey perfection!

I stopped at Piroshky Piroshky on the Saturday before we flew home and waited at least 30 minutes to reach the front of the line, but like Pike Place Chowder it was absolutely worth the wait! On the tour we tried the Apple Cinnamon and Beef & Cheese, two of their most popular piroshkies, so I ordered those as well as their other most popular flavor – the Smoked Salmon Pate. I thought these hand-held pies were delicious on the tour but the bites we had didn’t come close to the warm, buttery, full-size versions of these wonderful Russian pastries! The Apple Cinnamon was good, but I preferred the two savory varieties and will definitely be ordering these when I return to Seattle (and I will definitely be returning)! I’d also really love to try the Cinnamon Cardamon Braid – they looked pretty delicious waiting for their turn in the oven!

If you couldn’t already tell, I’m seriously in love with Pike Place Market and Seattle and am already thinking about my return trip! If you’re planning a trip to Seattle in the near future I’d love to hear about your plans and if you’ve already visit I’d love to hear about what you loved most about the city!
