Amsterdam Bound

Written by , Posted in Travel

Tonight I leave for Amsterdam! Mike has been in The Hague all week for work so I’m flying out to meet him in Amsterdam for a quick visit. Neither of us have ever been so we’re super excited to just explore and see what The Netherlands has to offer!

I always love seeing “what I packed” posts on other blogs so I figured I might as well do one of my own! Here’s what I packed in my Lo & Sons O.G carry-on…

Packing

Packing

Lo & Sons O.G. bag: This bag has been hyped on tons of blogs for over a year now and with all the traveling we’re doing this year for our wedding and honeymoon I thought I’d take the plunge. I’ll only be in Amsterdam for 4 days so this bag and a small rolling carry-on were perfect-no need for checked bags!

Lo & Sons

Coach Legacy Leather Double Accordion Zip: My mom got me this wallet for Christmas and I absolutely love it. There’s a compartment for my iPhone so it doubles as a wristlet and the bright yellow color is great for spring/summer.

Bose QuietComfort Noise Canceling Headphones: These are a must for me on planes, even when I’m not listening to music or watching a movie. Once you turn these bad boys on it totally dulls the sound of the plane and/or the sound of any small children that might not be happy on said plane.

Yes! To Cucumbers facial towelettes and Colgate Wisps: After an 8 hour flight you need a little refresher!

L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand CreamMAC Lip Conditioner and Christian Dior Creme de Rose: Gotta keep my hands and lips soft on those dry airplanes! This is my all-time favorite hand cream (by a long shot) and 2 of my favorite lip conditioners.

Josie Maran Argan Color Stick in Rosy: My go-to multi-tasker. After a long flight I need a little brightening up and this gives my cheeks and lips the PERFECT rosy flush.

Packing

Tieks flats in Camel: My absolute favorite flats (I gushed about them here). Cute colors, super comfortable and they fold up for ideal packability! (I’ll be wearing my Obsidian Black Tieks on the plane)

Cole Haan Kindle Touch Cover: Simple, black leather cover and it was on sale!

Kindle Touch: I bought my Kindle almost a year ago after much debate-I wasn’t quite ready to give up the pretty covers on my books! Now…I can’t live without it!

Creme de la Creme Moleskine: For notes, or lists, or whatever else I feel like writing down…plus it’s just super cute 🙂

Hello Merch sweatshirt, scarf (available in store at DSW) and socks: I always get a little chilly on flights, especially if I’m lucky enough to score an exit row seat, so I’ve learned to pack a little extra coverage just in case.

iPhone 5 (Coach cover), MacBook Pro (not pictured), Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR (taking the pictures) and my new Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens: Obviously I’m not going anywhere without my techy essentials. I recently bought this new lens so I’m excited to give it a whirl!

Pottery Barn Calista jewelry roll (similar here): Even when I check a bag I always carry my jewelry with me, not taking any chances with that!

Larabars, Sunsweet Plum Amazins: Trying to keep the snacks healthy…because I know I’ll probably be indulging in waffles and pastries once I land!

I also have a few other miscellaneous items in tow: all the cords/chargers/batteries for my nerdy gear, make-up bag with a few essentials, my passport (old Kate Spade cover), Kleenex, an umbrella, neck pillow, magazines for take-off and landing, and I’m sure a few other random things will find their way in at some point!

So…that’s what’s in my bag! I’ll be blogging about our trip when I can so stay tuned!

Nerd Alert-book worm

Written by , Posted in Book Reviews

So contrary to what some of my previous posts may lead you to believe, I do enjoy doing other things besides boozing.  One of these things is reading.  I just finished reading The Help and I loved it!

For those of you who haven’t heard about this book yet, it is set in Jackson, Mississippi during the beginning of the civil rights movement.  It is told from the perspective of 3 different women, 2 black maids and 1 white woman and it basically tells the stories of these maids and the difficulties they face living in one of the most segregated areas of the south.  For any guys reading my blog, this book and the others in this post probably aren’t for you-I’ve been on more of a “chick” book kick as of late.  For any women-if you haven’t yet already, I strongly recommend giving this book a read-I really, really enjoyed it.
As for my next read, I’m on to Every Last One by Anna Quindlen.  My mom recently read this book on vacay and passed it on to me.  I’d read some reviews on it a while back and it sounded pretty good so I’ll let you know what I think of it when I’m done!

Here’s a few others that are in my reading queue that I’ll be sure to update you on once I finish:

Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls-I loved her first book, The Glass Castle, so hopefully this one is just as good.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford is a story set in Seattle during the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.  I’ve really enjoyed other books I have read that are set during WWII such as The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and The Zookeeper’s Wife, particularly because I learned a little about what went on in different areas of the world during that period of time.
I also need to get started on Dead Until Dark and Living Dead in Dallas-the first 2 books in the Sookie Stackhouse series.  Its about time I got my vampire back on!
So that’s it for now-I will post my thoughts on these books as I go through them.  On a somewhat related note-lately I’ve been thinking about getting a Kindle but am a little torn. It would be great because its super small and doesn’t take up as much space as most books and it also saves paper and space of all those books I’d be buying that then sit on my shelf.  But part of me just can’t part with the pretty covers and feel of a real book in my hands.  Any thoughts?  Does anyone that has one have any strong feelings on the subject?  Discuss.
